COVID-19: Red alert as Maldives records 1,420 new cases

Health Protection Agency (HPA), on Monday, announced 1,420 additional cases of COVID-19, increasing confirmed cases in Maldives to 105,001.  

With the surge in cases, the alert level has been raised from orange to red.   

According to HPA, the 1,420 new cases include; 826 cases from the greater Male’ region, 346 cases from residential islands outside Male’, 84 cases from operational resorts, and 1 case from liveaboards. 

Meanwhile, 402 additional COVID-19 patients were confirmed to have made full recoveries over the last 24 hours, increasing total recoveries to 97,730.    

With the new developments, Maldives now has 6,993 active cases.      

There are 32 patients in hospitals.      

6,456 samples have been tested for COVID-19 over the last 24-hours, including 3,439 samples from the greater Male' region. The positivity rate in the greater Male’ area is at 24 percent. 

With the 1,420 new infections on Monday, 6,495 people have tested positive over the last one-week period.  

January 17: 1,420 cases 

January 16: 1,209 cases 

January 15: 954 cases 

January 14: 967 cases 

January 13: 816 cases 

January 12: 536 cases 

January 11: 593 cases 

Maldives has recorded 265 COVID-19 deaths. 

Maldives began its vaccination campaign in February last year. The country expanded the campaign to begin vaccinating children between 12 years and 17 years of age six months later, in August, and began administering the booster dose the same month. 

As of Sunday, 397,211 people have received their first dose and 368,817 people have been fully vaccinated, and 35,086 have received their booster dose.
