President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih states he will not stop counter-drug operations, even if it may be displeasing to some.
He made the remark in his speech at the inauguration of the N. Landhoo Harbor on Tuesday.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Solih described drugs as the biggest social issue in Maldives.
“I have to say there are very few places in Maldives the scourge of drugs has left untouched,” he said.
President said that a national taskforce has been established to address the issue, and that the results of the efforts of the taskforce will become evident by the middle of this year.
He noted that drugs are trafficked into Maldives from other countries, making it necessary to seek assistance from other countries to stop drug trafficking.
“We need to seek foreign assistance in this. Because we are maintaining our borders together. As you know, we seized more drugs last year than in any year in Maldivian history,” he said.
President Solih said that there are some people who are displeased with the efforts to counter drug trafficking, but he will not stop the efforts.
“They are the people who engage in drug trafficking in Maldives and the people addicted to illegal trade. They will not like this. But I will not stop this,” he said.
President Solih said he will not stand watching as generation after generation of Maldivians are lost in the scourge of drugs.
