VP Faisal assures government will uphold ‘One-China’ policy

The government has once again given the assurance that they will continue to uphold the ‘One-China’ policy.

‘One-China’ policy is the diplomatic acknowledgment of China's position that there is only one sovereign state under the name China and Taiwan is part of China, as opposed to the idea that there are two states.

The Ambassador of China to the Maldives Wang Lixin paid a courtesy call to Vice President Faisal Naseem on Tuesday – during which VP Faisal highlighted long-lasting friendly relations between China and Maldives.

He further noted that Maldives treasures assistance and cooperation from China, especially the assistance rendered towards the COVID-19 response efforts. He also named China’s invaluable contributions to the socio-economic development of the Maldives – also highlighting the assistance rendered in the fields of tourism, healthcare, infrastructure development, and higher education.

Moreover, VP Faisal reiterated the Maldivian government’s commitment to upholding the ‘One-China’ policy.

He also conveyed gratitude to the Chinese government for the assistance provided to the Maldives in its endeavor to join the G20’s Debt Service Suspension Initiative – which significantly assisted in restarting the economy.

Ambassador Wang applauded the government’s efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country, and subsequently reopen its borders to resume tourism.

Noting the elections relations between the two countries over the year – Ambassador Wang pointed that next year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations between the two.

She also expressed her wish to explore new avenues for cooperation in the future. On this note, she discussed strengthening social and cultural ties.

VP Faisal expressed confidence that existing bilateral ties between the two countries would be solidified during her tenure.

Concluding the call, the Vice President and the Ambassador reiterated the commitment to continue bilateral relations on a positive trajectory.
