With two additional Covid fatalities, death toll rises to 250

Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced on Monday that two COVID-19 patients have passed away, increasing Maldives’ death toll from the disease to 250.

The first death was recorded from N. Atoll.

HPA identified the deceased as a 54-year-old Maldivian female admitted at the N. Atoll Hospital.

She passed away at 02:00 am.

“This is the 249th COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” confirmed HPA in a tweet. 

The second death was recorded from the capital.

HPA identified the deceased as a 90-year-old Maldivian male admitted at the Hulhumale’ Medical Facility.

He passed away at 10:42 am.

“This is the 250th COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” confirmed HPA in a tweet. 

It also marks the seventh COVID-19 death in November. 

Maldives has 91,464 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 114 new cases recorded on Sunday. 89,434 patients have since recovered.    

The country currently has 1,769 active cases. 12 of the patients are hospitalized.

Maldives imposed new travel restrictions this week following the emergence of Omicron, a concerning new variant of COVID-19. Entrance of tourists from seven southern African countries - South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Eswatini – has been banned, while locals and work-permit holders arriving from the countries are required to quarantine.
