Islands under monitoring double as COVID cases rise in atolls

The islands under monitoring in response to COVID-19 cases have doubled compared to last October.

The list released by Health Protection Agency (HPA) shows there are currently 31 islands outside the greater Male’ area under monitoring. The figure is double the average 15 islands under monitoring last October.

The islands under monitoring the longest are four districts of Addu City placed under monitoring in August; Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, and Feydhoo. The district of Hulhumeedhoo was placed under monitoring in early September.

Addu City has 2,461 confirmed cases. 2,055 patients have since recovered, while 11 have died from complications.

The city currently has 396 active cases.

Another island placed under monitoring in September was F. Nilandhoo. 10 islands were placed under monitoring in October, while 15 more island have been placed under monitoring so far this November.

Maldives has 89,713 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 184 new cases recorded on Saturday. 87,225 patients have since recovered, while 247 have died from complications.

The country currently has 2,228 active cases. 13 of the patients are hospitalized.
