Pickup used for parliamentary system campaign vandalized, campaign obstructed

Central Maafannu MP Ibrahim Rasheed (Bonde) and members of the public signs petition calling for a referendum to decide on a parliamentary system.

The parliamentary system campaign has been obstructed by a group of people – who had stopped and vandalized a pickup that was being used in the campaign. This campaign is being conducted to encourage people to sign the petition calling for a constitutional referendum to switch from a presidential system to a parliamentary system.

Ahmed Nishan – the lawyer who is a leading member of the campaign – had told Sun that the pickup which was vandalized was being used to make a public announcement inviting people to join a gathering to be held tonight as part of the campaign.

“The pickup was being driven around making that announcement – until a group of people stopped it. Then they damaged the generator, and the props we had been carrying out. Those who were on the pickup at the time were also harassed, and their things were also damaged,” he had said.

Speaking further, Nishan noted that vandalizing the pickup had significantly obstructed their effort to invite members of the public to tonight’s event.

“The messages we wanted to deliver to the public regarding tonight’s event was stopped at that point. The pickup broke down because its facilities have been damaged,” he stated.

Nishan also noted that the matter has been verbally reported to the Police – whereas they are currently working to submit an official complaint.

He also reiterated that no matter how much people may try to obstruct the campaign – it will never be stopped nor weakened.

“We will not even take one step backward. The way things had happened today – has strengthened our wills. Every person has become 10 people,” he had said.

The event scheduled to be held at 20:30 tonight at the west park area – is aimed at creating awareness regarding the parliamentary system amongst the public and encouraging them to sign the petition.
