President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih held a meeting with AA. Ukulhas Council today – during which he listened to the concerns of Ukulhas residents affecting their daily lives and livelihoods – shared by the Councilors.

The meeting was held at the President’s Office this afternoon – where the Councilors noted that the most important government project for the island residents is the land reclamation to address the scarcity of space.

Additionally, the Councilors also highlighted the difficulties faced by residents due to the damaged roads – stressing the need for a road development project. Other urban development programs were also suggested including upgrading the current ferry terminal and repairs to the jetty at the local harbor.

The Councilors also requested for a youth center to be established on the island – and increase programs aimed at the youth including the establishment of a Technical-Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Center on the island.

Avenues to improve healthcare at Ukulhas were also discussed – with the expansion and broadening of the availability of medical services at the island’s Health Center being in suggestion.

In responding to these requests and suggestions – President Solih stated that government would provide full support to the Council to lawfully commission the ferry terminal upgrades to a private contractor. He also added the issues raised would be shared with the relevant government authorities in order to find speedy solutions.

The current administration – in its two years of governance – has spent an estimated amount of MVR 25,930,550 on development projects which saw the establishment of an outdoor gym, electricity network upgrades, and acquisition of a new 600kW electric generator. Currently, a project to repair the damages to the ferry terminal is ongoing in addition to the land reclamation project – contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). A project to develop a youth center and the expansion of the Health Center are planned to be tendered to during the last quarter of this year.
