COVID-19: Active cases in Addu surge above 200

 The COVID-19 situation continues to worsen in Addu - Maldives’ second-most populous Maldivian city – with active cases now above 200. 

Addu Deputy Mayor Mohamed Shuau told Sun this Wednesday that active cases as of 06:00 pm last Tuesday stands at 215. 

“When looking at the current situation, active cases are significantly high,” he said. 

Shuau said that though the number of active cases is high, the number of people who have developed serious illness is low. 

A senior official from Addu Equatorial Hospital said the city recorded its highest single-day surge in COVID-19 cases last Tuesday with 37 new cases. 

The highest number of cases are from Maradhoo district, which has 106 active cases. 

The districts of Addu connected via the link road are under monitoring, and are under a 09:00 pm – 04:00 am curfew.
