Spokesperson of the President’s Office Mabrook Azeez has stated that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s stature in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is as its leader.

Speaking at a press conference held this afternoon, Spokesperson Mabrook stated that President Solih is the most superior in the leadership of MDP – which is something that is clearly understood by most members of the party. Mabrook’s statement comes at a time some MDP members have claimed that President Solih is not the party’s leader and that Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed is. A lot of them has also criticized President Solih for meeting members of the party during his visits to islands as the ‘leader’ of MDP.

“President’s stature in the party is referred to as its most senior official in the leadership – or as its leader. The party itself has referred to him this way before,”

“I think this is clearly understood by most MDP members as well,” he had said.

Speaking further, Mabrook pointed that there is controversy regarding the matter as when President Solih had met MDP members during a recent visit to Th. Thimarafushi – a banner had stated that he was the Party’s leader. Mabrook also noted that he himself had referred to President Solih as the ‘leader’ of MDP in one of his tweets – as President Solih had met with the party members in the capacity of the party’s leader. He also added that President Solih will always be meeting MDP members in the capacity of the party’s leader and not as the President.
