World Tourism Day to be celebrated at Addu City this year

The Maldives welcomes the 500,000th tourist of 2020 on December 17 at a ceremony held in Velana International Airport.

Tourism Ministry had decided that World Tourism Day will be officially celebrated at Addu City this year.

Every September 27th is marked as World Tourism Day.

Speaking to Sun today, Senior Policy Director at Tourism Ministry Ibrahim Farhad had confirmed the Ministry’s decision to officially celebrate the occasion in Addu City this year. In this regard, Farhad noted that the Ministry has planned a string of activities to take place at the city – which will span out from September 27 to October 3.

Noting that all the activities planned for World Tourism Day last year had been canceled due to the pandemic – he added that there is a possibility that changes might be brought to the schedule this year as well depending on the COVID-19 situation at that time.

“While we have finalized a schedule now – but there is a chance for last-minute changes depending on the Covid situation,” he had said.

Farhad also detailed that the activities were planned with the ‘new normal’ guidelines as the main focus – in the light of the COVID-19 situation at the islands.

Accordingly, the activities which the Ministry have planned for this year are:  

September 27: Marathon

September 28: Photo Competition

September 28: Island Crossing Race

September 29: Beach Cleaning

September 30: Water Sports Carnival

October 1: Job Fair

October 2: Children’s Festival

October 3: Cultural Activities

October 3: Tourist Mapping
