Nasheed: Maldives confirmed to be on the verge of extinction due to climate change

Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that it has been confirmed today that Maldives is on the verge of extinction due to climate change.

Nasheed made this statement via a tweet today in which he had shared an article by BBC – citing that its contents were devastating news for the countries which are most vulnerable to climate change such as the Maldives.

BBC’s article shared by Nasheed that the United Nations (UN) is set to reveal a landmark report compiled by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – the largest ever report into climate change that details the reality of the state of this planet. IPCC is said to have reviewed over 14,000 scientific papers in compiling this report.

The last time the IPCC looked at the science of global warming was in 2013 - and scientists believe they have learned a lot since then.

Accordingly, the BBC reports on behalf of IPCC stressing that the world has experienced record-breaking temperatures, raging wildfires and devastating flooding – since then. In addition to this, it is also noted that the sea level would continue to rise for hundreds or possibly thousands of years because of the heat already trapped in deep in the ocean. 

In his tweet, Nasheed highlighted that Maldives has always been at the forefront when advocating for climate emergency. Maldives is amongst the countries which will be deeply impacted if the sea level continues to rise. Nasheed added that the country is already battered by extreme climate.

Nasheed also warned that climate emergency is intensifying, hence called for the attention of all nations on the matter.
