A COVID-19 patient admitted at Hulhumale’ Medical Facility (HMF) passed away earlier tonight at 19:58 hours.

Sun is able to confirm the identity of the latest COVID-19 fatality as a 60-year-old Maldivian male.

His death increased the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the Maldives to 215 and marks the first death to be recorded in four days.

The last COVID-19 fatality was recorded four days ago at Sh. Atoll Covid Management Facility in Funadhoo – identified as a 59-year-old Maldivian female.

Maldives experienced an alarming surge in COVID-19 cases in May – marked by an all-time high of 88 deaths. The surge was controlled with the tightening of restrictions – especially in the populous greater Male’ area. The restrictions proved effective in controlling the surge. Daily cases, which rose above 2,000, have now dropped to under 100, allowing authorities to introduce significant easements in restrictions this July.
