81-year-old woman dies in Vilingili, marking 212th COVID-19 death

Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced on Thursday that a COVID-19 patient admitted at GA. Atoll Covid Management Facility in Vilingili has passed away.

HPA identified the latest fatality as an 81-year-old Maldivian female.

She passed away at 04:55 am on Thursday.

“This is the 212th COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” said HPA.

GA. Atoll Hospital’s manager Shareef Ahmed told Sun the woman passed away 10 days after she was admitted at the facility.

The death comes less than seven hours after a 91-year-old COVID-19 patient admitted at IGMH in Male’ passed away.

Maldives experienced an alarming surge in COVID-19 cases in May – marked by an all-time high of 88 deaths. The surge was controlled with the tightening of restrictions – especially in the populous greater Male’ area. The restrictions proved effective in controlling the surge, and significant easements in the restrictions kicked-in this July.

Maldives has 73,798 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 138 new cases recorded on Wednesday. 69,974 patients have since recovered.

The country currently has 3,602 active cases. 28 of the patients are hospitalized.
