President Solih thanks US for planned vaccine aid

President of the Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has expressed gratitude towards the President of the United States of America Joe Biden for including the Maldives among a list of nations to be the first to receive COVID-19 vaccine donations from the US. 

President Solih tweeted last night expressing gratitude on behalf of the Maldivian people to President Joe Biden and the American people for the inclusion of the Maldives in the new US global vaccine sharing program.

President Solih said that the donated vaccine doses from the US would be highly welcomed in the fight against COVID-19 in the Maldives.

The US has previously announced that it will be donated around seven million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to the Asia region nations, including the Maldives. Around 75 percent of the donations would be made through the COVAX facility, according to the US. 

The US has previously provided assistance to the Maldives on multiple occasions. 

During the height of the pandemic, the US provided the Maldives with USD 9.1 million in assistance, including 60 ventilators, and just yesterday, the US announced that it will be providing emergency medical supplies to the Maldives.
