The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has increased the quarantine period of Maldives from 10 days to 14 days in order to stop the spread of the virus.

HPA today made an announcement reading that the Director-General of Public Health Maimoona Aboobakuru had decided to extend the quarantine period to 14 days. The quarantine period affects those traveling domestically and international arrivals to the Maldives.

The HPA had previously reduced the quarantine period to 10 days after cases began to reduce. The extension comes on the back a massive surge in cases in the nation. A total of eight deaths have been recorded in relation to the virus in the last 48 hours. More than 1,400 cases have also been confirmed in the last two days alone.

Five islands including the capital area are under partial curfews due to the virus.

More than 33,000 people have now been tested positive for the virus. Active cases are at an excess of 7,000 with 203 people hospitalized.
