Former Maldivian Supreme Court Justice Mujthaz Fahmy, 60, has passed away while receiving treatment at the Dharumavantha Hospital after contracting COVID-19.
He passed away at 02:03 am on Thursday.
According to his family, Mujthaz tested positive for COVID-19 while on a family trip to L. Atoll after he became sick with a fever.
His test result came back positive on Sunday, January 3. He was in home quarantine at the time.
Mujthaz was initially treated at the L. Gan COVID Facility and transferred to Dharumavantha Hospital in Male’ City on Wednesday evening after his condition deteriorated.
Mujthaz served as a judge for a long period of time, also serving as a Supreme Court justice from September 2008 to August 2010 during the transitional period.
Mujthaz is the brother of incumbent North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy and the father of former Maavah MP Azhan Fahmy.
With Mujthaz’s death, Maldives’s COVID-19 fatalities has risen to 49.

Maldives has 13,697 confirmed coronavirus cases, including 37 new cases recorded on Wednesday. 13,225 patients have since recovered.
The country currently has 687 active cases. 40 coronavirus patients are hospitalized.
