COVID-19: 5 more test positive from Niyama resort

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced five more have tested positive for COVID-19 from Niyama Private Islands Maldives, a resort island located in Dh. Atoll.

With the five people who tested positive on Saturday, COVID-19 cases in the resort has risen to 12.

HPA states that the five new cases are contacts of the initial cases confirmed from the resort.

7 COVID-19 cases were identified in Niyama on Wednesday, December 30. Samples were taken from 17 people identified as their contacts.

HPA states that the five new cases identified among the contacts include both tourists and staff.

Following the discovery of the cases, Niyama has been placed under monitoring by HPA, with travel in and out of the island restricted.

Maldives has 13,834 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 30 new cases on Saturday. 13,166 have since recovered, and 48 patients have died from complications.

The country currently has 613 active cases. 29 patients are hospitalized.
