COVID-19: Maldives confirms 21 new cases

Health Protection Agency (HPA), has announced 21 additional cases of COVID-19, increasing confirmed cases in the Maldives to 12,030..

According to HPA, the new cases include 14 locals and seven foreigners.

15 of the cases were identified from the greater Male’ region, while the remaining six cases were identified from other atolls.

Meanwhile, 50 additional COVID-19 patients were confirmed to have made full recoveries over the last 24 hours, increasing total recoveries to 11,182.

With the new developments, Maldives now has 800 active cases.

There are 210 patients in isolation facilities and 47 in hospitals.

1,492 samples have been tested for COVID-19 over the last 24 hours.

There are active cases in 13 inhabited islands as well as 26 resorts. The cases from resorts include 54 tourists and 140 staffers.

The Maldives identified its first COVID-19 case on March 7 and declared a state of public health emergency over the pandemic less than a week later on March 12. The majority of the cases identified in the nation have come from the capital Male' City.

41 COVID-19 patients have died from complications. Two patients have passed away this week.
