Police investigate threat against local reporter

Maldives Police Service said on Wednesday that they are investigating an incident in which a former parliamentarian allegedly issued death threats against Ahmed Azaan, a reporter at online news outlet Dhiyares.

According to Azaan, he and his colleague Nahil Ahmed were verbally harassed by former Feydhoo MP Alhan Fahmy and an associate in the streets of Male’ on the night of October 12.

The police said on Wednesday that the case was reported to the police the same night, and that the case is under investigation.

Both Maldives Media Council (MMC) and Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) have expressed concern over the incident, and have called on the police to conduct a speedy investigation into the case.

Alhan denies the allegation that he threatened the reporters, stating that that it had been he who had been harassed by Azaan and additional individuals with him.

Alhan said he reported the incident to the police. However, the police have yet to make a comment regarding the complaint lodged by Alhan.
