Former MP passes away due to COVID-19, 33rd virus death

Former parliamentarian for R. Atoll Ismail Zakariyya.

Former Parliamentarian for R. Atoll constituency Ismail Zakariyya has passed away due to COVID-19. 

Zakariyya was receiving treatment for the virus through a ventilator in Dharumavantha Hospital, according to his family. His son, Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) spokesperson Maj. Ibrahim Azim confirmed the death a short while ago. 

Maj. Azim had stated previously that his father was admitted for the on August 14.

“My father did not go outdoors. He contracted the virus from someone that visited the residence.” Said Maj. Azim, who added that his father had not received treatment for a serious illness before and was a very active person despite his age. 

Ismail Zakariyya had served the country for a long time. Zakariyya is also the father of former footballer Shah Ismail. Zakariyya last worked in the Youth and Sports Ministry.

Zakriyya’s death is the 33rd COVID-19 related death in the Maldives. 

The Maldives currently has 1,809 active cases as well as 113 hospitalized cases.
