MVR 550,000 in fines for curfew violation over 2 weeks

Maldives Police Service has announced that 550 people have been fined for violation of the curfew order in effect in the greater Male’ region over a two-week period.

Maldives Police Service said that over the two-week period from August 22 to September 4; 1,143 people were reprimanded and 550 people were fined for curfew violation.

Curfew violation carries a fine of MVR 1,000. This means that the state is due MVR 550,000 in fines for curfew violation over the period.

The highest curfew violations were recorded on August 22; when 147 people were reprimanded and 60 people were fined.

Authorities extended the curfew to 10:00 pm to 05:00 am and implemented an additional 08:00 pm to 05:00 am ban on vehicular traffic in August, following a surge in coronavirus cases with the relaxation of the lockdown.
