Fmr. Deputy Mayor of Male' City charged with corruption

Former Deputy Mayor of Male’ City Ibrahim Sujau.

Former Deputy Mayor of Male’ City Ibrahim Sujau has been charged with corruption.

The charge against Sujau stems from an Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigation into a case lodged with the commission over the allegation Male’ City Council passed the blueprints for a building and issued permits, authorizing construction on a building at a height that exceeds the height limit permitted under Male’ Planning Regulation, on a 250 square foot land owned by a private citizen.

Public Prosecutor and Media Official of the Prosecutor General’s Office Ahmed Shafeeu said that the former Council official was charged with misuse of official capacity and obtaining unfair advantages in permitting the construction of buildings exceeding the height limits stipulated under the planning regulations.

ACC had requested for Sujau to be charged with using the influence of position to obtain or confer an undue advantage under Article 12 (a) of the Anti-Corruption Act.

Shafeeu said that the charges were lodged with the Criminal Court.
