Addu City Council, on Sunday, announced that 1,031 people had registered as poor in the city, all of whom had been distributed the annual Zakat al-Fitr.
The council said it received MVR 349,079.37 as zakat from 12,494 of the city’s residents.
The money collected as zakat had seen transferred to the bank accounts of the people registered as poor, said the council.
The records released by the council show the highest number of people registered as poor in Addu City are residents of Hithadhoo. Hithadhoo has 541 people registered as poor, while 6,348 of the district’s residents provided a total of MVR 182,430.61 as zakat.
The zakat per head in Hithadhoo comes to MVR 337.21.
In Feydhoo, 2,118 residents provided MVR 63,132.69 as zakat. The district has 111 people registered as poor. The zakat per head therefore comes to MVR 568.76.
In Maradhoo, 1,554 residents provided MVR 42,403.68 as zakat. The district has 72 people registered as poor. The zakat per head therefore comes to MVR 588.94.
In Meedhoo, 1,074 residents provided MVR 24,783 as zakat. The district has 109 people registered as poor. The zakat per head therefore comes to MVR 227.37.
In Maradhoo-Feydhoo, 840 residents provided MVR 21,494.39 as zakat. The district has 62 people registered as poor. The zakat per head therefore comes to MVR 341.18.
And in Hulhudhoo, 560 residents provided MVR 14,835 as zakat. The district has 136 people registered as poor. The zakat per head therefore comes to MVR 109.08.
The records also show an increase in the number of people registered as poor in Addu City. 893 people registered as poor last year, while 1,031 people registered as poor this year.
Addu City has a population of 33,690 people, making for the largest residential population outside of the capital.
