Islamic Minister: MVR 1m from Zakat Fund allocated for the needy

Islamic Ministry will allocate MVR 10 million from the Zakat Fund to assist members of the public who are faced with dire conditions due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus in the country.

The virus has left the economy in shambles and has resulted in the loss of jobs by many, despite government measures to mitigate the situation.

The government efforts have provided relief for many, and Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahir, speaking in a live telecast on Raajje TV stated that the Gender Ministry will receive MVR 1 million from the Zakat Fund to assist people in difficult situations.

“We assisted those in difficult situations abroad from the Zakat Fund, with MVR 3 million. Now we are going to assist those in the country, by providing the Gender Ministry with MVR 1 million.” Said the Minister.

The Ministry has also arranged means for people with financial difficulties to break their fast.

“We will also, god willing, make arrangements for people with difficulties to break their fast, by working with the Gender Ministry.” Said the Minister in the live telecast.

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has already announced that Friday, April 24, will be the first day of the holy month of Ramadan in the Maldives. Minister Zahir has urged the public to continue with good deeds and to fast as accordingly during the Ramadan, as the whole country is faced with the difficult situation of COVID-19.
