Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that the current spread of the Covid-19 virus in Male’ City is a consequence of some members of the public failing to heed the instructions of the authorities.

The first case of Covid-19 in Male’ City, Patient 21, was confirmed on Wednesday. Patient 21 had no travel history nor contact with another positive case. Seven cases have now been confirmed in the capital so far. A large number of people are in quarantine following contact with the positive cases.

Former President Maumoon, who governed the country for almost 30 years, tweeted today that the failure of the public to listen to the instructions of the authorities had resulted in the spread of the virus in the capital.  He also advised people to heed the instructions of the authorities, remain indoors and practice social distancing.

The lockdown ordered on Male’ City following the first confirmed case has now been extended to 14-days following the newly confirmed cases.
