A deviated septum is a medical condition where the bone and cartilage that divide the nasal cavity of the nose in half, is crooked or not centered, making breathing difficult.
Around 80 percent of people are affected by this medical condition in some manner. The worst affected require medical attention if not received can cause immense breathing difficulties.
Some are faced with this condition due to an injury sustained while others are born with it. In some cases, people with this condition rely on one nostril more than the other for breathing while others may face blockages of one nostril. A deviated septum can cause sinusitis, bleeding from the nose, headaches, and pain as well as loud breathing and obstructive sleep apnea.
Medications can ease the problems from this condition on some occasions while at other times a septoplasty surgery is required to treat the condition. Sometimes the procedure is conducted with rhinoplasty surgery. The latter procedure is a surgery that changes the shape of the nose.
When combined the two procedures are called Septorhinoplasty surgery and takes around one and a half hours. It is imperative to consult with an ENT doctor before consulting with a plastic surgeon if a deviated septum is suspected.
While Tree Top Hospital provides this service, it also provides other such surgeries.
