Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) will not be charging for a ton of water for every household in the country.
MWSC made the announcement after government spokesperson Mabrook Azeez said in a news conference last night that one ton of water would be provided to every household in the country for free. Mabrook did not state any details of how this would be done.
In a news conference held today, MWSC Managing Director Hassan Shah said that the company had 44,033 domestic customers currently and that the company had decided to not charge the households for a ton of water supply.
“The real purpose behind this, since everyone is advising for good hygiene and handwashing. we received some information that there were worries by customers that the water bills would rise if frequent hand washing is practiced,” said Shah who added that the move would cost around MVR 3 million.
