Government spokesperson Mabrook Azeez has announced that no symptoms of the Covid-19 disease have been noticed from the 90 people in isolation from the Kuredu Island Resort. The resort is the location of the first two cases of the virus in the country.

An Italian tourist who had visited the resort later tested positive for the disease after departing from the Maldives. The government announced yesterday that the tourist had visited the capital city and stayed at the Maagiri Hotel in the capital for a two-day period before departing. During a news conference last night, Mabrook also informed that two new cases of the virus were identified from the Kuredu, bringing the total figure for the infected in the Maldives to six.

The resort is placed in lockdown and orange level of alert following the confirmed cases. Mabrook informed that 90 were placed in isolation from Kuredu, out of which 60 remained on the resort. 25 people from the resort are in isolation elsewhere.

“No symptoms are visible from the 90 people (in isolation),” said Mabrook.

15 people in Male’ city have also been placed in isolation separately after coming into contact with the Italian tourist. They include employees of the Maagiri Hotel, where the tourist had stayed until the departure arrangements were confirmed. One employee of the Emirates ticketing office in the capital has also been placed in quarantine after exhibiting symptoms. The employee had communicated with the Italian tourist during a visit to the ticketing office.

Prosecutor Hussain Shameem has issued an order to the police to investigate allegations of negligence by authorities that had allowed the infected tourist to depart. Speaking on the matter last night, Mabrook said that there were two or three scenarios in play and that information regarding the investigation would be provided by police from now on. He did, however, assure that the government would take action against anyone liable, before adding that work to identify those in contact with the Italian tourist was still being carried out.

In total, 11 people have been placed in quarantine in Farukolhufushi. They include people with symptoms identified from Foakaidhoo and Kuredu.

Health Ministry also informed last night that a total of 174 people had been in contact with the Italian tourist in Kuredu.
