Children’s shelter in Addu, Eydhafushi; daycare center in Male’

The state budget for the year 2020 has plans to establish a children’s shelter in Addu city and B. Eydhafushi.

The budget was presented to the Parliament by Finance Minister Ahmed Ameer yesterday who declared that the government’s priority was to provide Maldivians with social security and providing government services in an equal manner.

MVR 1.64 million was allocated for the planned shelter in Addu city in the state budget for 2020 and MVR 12.73 million is included in the budgets for the year 2021 and 2022. On the other hand, MVR 1.97 million is allocated for the shelter planned in Eydhafushi in the 2020 budget and MVR 7.39 million in the budget for 2021 and MVR 492,500 for the year 2022.

Currently, the government runs two shelters in Villimale’ and Hulhumale’. The government also has plans to establish a center for the elderly in L. Atoll and Hulhumale’ as well. MVR 14 million is allocated for this project.

The government also has plans to establish a daycare center for working parents in Male’ city and has designated MVR 4.63 million in the state budget for the center. There are currently a number of daycare centers run by private companies and individual citizens.
