Fathimath Zaina has been elected Vice President of Maldives Broadcasting Commission.
Zaina replaces former VP of BroadCom, Ismail Sofwan, who resigned from his post on June 13.
BroadCom convened for a meeting to elect a new VP this Monday.
The commission reports that Zaina was elected its new VP with the unanimous consensus of all members who attended the meeting, but did not specify the exact number of members.
Zaina had been the target of an impeachment petition submitted to the Parliament in 2017 after she was seen as one of the chief organizers of a gathering for senior citizens held by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration in Rasfannu.
The petition said that a member of an independent institution partaking in a political event undermined the independence and integrity of the commission.
The petition was rejected by the Parliament, which Yameen’s party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) enjoyed a majority in.
BroadCom, throughout Yameen’s administration, was accused of obstructing the freedom of the press and political bias.
Zaina was appointed to the BroadCom in April, 2016.
