World Down syndrome Day is celebrated every year in the 21st of March. This year it falls on this Thursday. World Down syndrome Day was first celebrated on 21st March 2012.
Down syndrome or trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21. It commonly results in variable effects on learning styles, physical characteristic or health.
United Nations General Assembly declared 21st March as World Down Syndrome Day in December 2011.The Assembly decided to observe World Down Syndrome Day on 21st March each year, effective from 2012.
The date for WDSD was selected to be 21st of the 3rd month to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome.
All member States and relevant organisations of the United Nations system along with other international organizations, civil society, including non- governmental organizations and the private sector observes World Down Syndrome Day to raise public awareness and create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down Syndrome.
Some characteristics noticeable in those with Down Syndrome are:
Down Syndrome Association of Maldives is called "Beautiful Eyes". With the introduction of Beautiful Eyes in 2012, 84 children have been registered in the organisation to this day.
However, according to the estimations of the organisation, there are around 600 to 700 children with Down Syndrome around the country.
The motto of this years' WDSD is "leave no one behind" , all people with Down Syndrome must have opportunities to live fulfilling lives, included on a full and equal basis with others, in all aspects of society.
