Suood: Lack of legislature will delay, but not obstruct commission’s work

The delay in legislation to empower the Presidential Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances will not obstruct the commission’s work, says Husnu Al Suood, the President of the commission.

The Parliament vote on the legislature to empower two presidential commissions established by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih failed due to lack of quorum last Saturday. And the Parliament is currently in recess.

President of Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances, former Attorney General Husnu Al Suood spoke to ‘Sun’ this Wednesday and said the commission will be able to continue with its work, but will face delays.

“The commission will not be weakened to the level it is not able to carry out its work. But there will be delays in investigations. But the work will continue regardless,” said Suood.

ALL CURRENT CASES WILL BE CLEARED WITHIN 3 MONTHS

Suood said the commission will complete investigations into its current cases within three months. And disclose its current cases within one week.

“I expect we will be able to complete investigations within 3 months,” said Suood, regarding the commission’s current workload.

He said the commission is receiving assistance from international investigative agencies through Maldives Police Service for its cases.

The presidential commission is investigating murders and enforced disappearances which have taken place in Maldives from January 1, 2012 to November 17, 2018.
