New political party applies for registration

A new political party has applied for registration, says Elections Commission (EC).

Two new political parties applied for registration three months back, but the applications were rejected by EC due to incomplete paperwork.

Spokesperson and member of EC, Ahmed Akram has confirmed a new political party has applied for registration. Akram says the application is being looked into by the commission’s legal team.

He said the applicant will be provided an answer next week.

‘Sun’ has been informed the new applicants hasn’t applied to form a political party before, and is an attorney and an active member of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Maldives currently has six registered political parties. Which are:

  1. Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)
  2. Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)
  3. Jumhoory Party (JP)
  4. Maldives Development Alliance (MDA)
  5. Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP)
  6. Adhaalath Party (AP)
