EC endorses amendments to MDP and JP’s constitutions

The Elections Commission (EC) has endorsed recent amendments to the constitutions of two opposition political parties – Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Jumhoory Party (JP).

EC has announced that it has endorsed and published the amendments to the constitution of MDP – which was passed during MDP’s congress, and the amendments to the constitution of JP – which was passed during JP’s national conference.

EC accepted the invitation to monitor the congresses of both parties, and sanctioned the congresses, ruling they observed no unlawful activity during both congresses.

During the congress held by MDP at A. A. Ukulhas with over 800 representatives, the party amended its constitution to authorize its national council and its congress to elect a presidential candidate.

And during the congress held by JP, the party created the position of ‘President’ and elected former Thoddoo MP Ali Waheed to the post. The party also voted to keep the position of ‘Leader’ vacant and assign the responsibilities of the position to the deputy leader – Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan.
