British PM 'middle of nowhere' comment elicits jab

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Mitt Romney jabbed. British Prime Minister David Cameron countered. Salt Lake City's mayor hit back.

Ah, let the games begin. No, not the much-anticipated 2012 Olympics, but an across-the-pond kerfuffle between host city London and 2002 Winter Olympics host Salt Lake City.

It began with the suggestion from presumptive Republican presidential nominee and leader of the Utah games, Mitt Romney, that British officials might not be prepared to pull off a successful Olympics.

Cameron retorted that it was easier to hold an Olympics in the "middle of nowhere" — a reference to Salt Lake City.

The mayor's office noted Friday that Utah officials would gladly educate Cameron on what the city has to offer, even providing a map so he doesn't have trouble finding "the middle of nowhere."
