KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysian custom officials say they have seized 58 million ringgit ($18 million) worth of drugs from a shipping container from India in the country's biggest drugs bust in a decade.
Customs official Matrang Suhaili says they found just under 3 million nimetazepam pills. The sedative is sometimes used to reduce the effect of methamphetamine and other stimulants. It is illegal in Malaysia.
Suhaili says the container had originally been heading to Hong Kong but reversed course and ended up in Malaysia's Port Klang on June 23. Based on a tip-off, he says customs officials raided the container seven days later. The pills were stuffed in black plastic bags hidden among sacks of chewing tobacco and incense sticks.
Matrang said Monday that officials detained four Malaysians and a Bangladeshi.
