Cases submitted to Criminal Court nearly double

Cases submitted by Prosecutor General’s Office to Criminal Court has nearly doubled within one year.

PG Office submitted 1,563 cases to Criminal Court in 2016, which is 757 cases more than the total 806 cases submitted by PG Office to Criminal Court in 2015.

Majority of the 1,563 cases submitted to Criminal Court are new submissions, reports the court; while some of the cases are resubmissions of cases retracted over various reasons.

Criminal Court reports that many of the cases don’t involve incidents which took place this year itself, but incidents which took place further back.

The highest number of cases were submitted during the last quarter of 2016; this includes 241 cases submitted in October, 140 cases submitted in November, and 210 cases submitted in December so far.

All of these cases, except for 163 cases which need amendments have been accepted into Criminal Court.

Only the PG Office has the authority to lodge cases with the Criminal Court.
