Bassam elected President of FAM

Former Secretary-General of Football Association of Maldives (FAM), Bassam Adheel Jaleel has been elected President of FAM.

Bassam won the election held this Sunday morning at Stelco seminar room by beating his contender, former President of FAM, Ahmed Toriq (Tom).

Bassam beat the football star-turned-lawmaker by a margin of three votes.

Bassam had got 14 votes, while Tom had got 11 votes.

The new President of FAM vowed to honor his pre-election promises during the coming four years; financial assistance of MVR 3 million to every first division club, financial assistance of MVR 500,000 to every second division club, and financial assistance of MVR 100,000 to the best five clubs of the third division.

During his speech after winning the election, Bassam said he hoped those who lost the election would also work with him on his team.

Bassam’s Senior Vice President is Fares-Maathodaa MP Hussein Mohamed Latheef, and his

Vice President is former volleyball and Basketball player Aishath Nazima – who was also a member of Tom’s ExCo.

Other members of Bassam’s ExCo are; Sales Manager of Maldives Gas – Mohamed Shifau, North Thinadhoo MP Abdulla Ahmed, Madaveli MP Muaz Mohamed Rasheed, Dhuvaafaru MP Mohamed Ali, Fuvahmulah MP Ali Shah and Hanimaadhoo MP Hussain Shahudhee.

The emergency election was made necessary after five members of the ExCo resigned over lack of confidence in Tom – approximately five months into his term.
