Accident during Hindu festival in Mumbai kills 1

MUMBAI, India (AP) — Indian officials say a man was killed when the metal awning over a Mumbai shop collapsed onto a crowd of people during a Hindu festival procession.

The head of the King Edward Memorial Hospital says the victim was on the street with others watching a statue of the elephant god Ganesh being carried in the parade. The awning fell on him under the weight of dozens of people who had crowded onto it for a better view of the idol.

Hospital chief Sanjay Oak says six other people were treated for minor injuries and released.

The accident occurred on the last day Sunday of the 10-day Ganesh Chaturti festival during which millions in India celebrate the birth of the Hindu god and worship idols in his image.
