AG: Maldives facing challenges in promoting human rights

Attorney General of Maldives, Mohamed Anil has stated that Maldives was facing challenges in promoting human rights, launching the workshop to create the first National Human Rights Action Plan this Monday.

The event is being held at Champa Central Hotel.

“We face some needed challenges, and unwanted challenges. There are challenges we can manipulate, and then there are challenges we cannot control,” said AG Anil.

He said that the country was in its infant stage of both human rights advocacy and democracy, and was therefore challenges that cannot be avoided.

He noted that such challenges had been faced and overcome by other countries, and that Maldives therefore needed to educated regarding the challenges faced by the other countries and how they overcame them, in order to create an action plan to promote human rights in Maldives.

Anil said that it was the responsibility of the State to ensure and promote human rights of its

citizens, and expressed confident that each and every government that rules over the country would continue honoring the responsibility.

He said that the current government considered protection and promotion of human rights a huge priority.

Anil said that unity among stakeholders and a goal oriented mentality was key to creating the National Human Rights Action Plan, despite the many differences that exist.

He said that it was the aim of the State to announce and implement the historic National Human Rights Action Plan on December 10.
