Austria beats Ukraine 3-2 in Euro 2012 warmup game

INNSBRUCK, Austria (AP) — Marko Arnautovic scored in the 89th minute to help Austria beat European Championship co-host Ukraine 3-2 in a friendly on Friday.

The Werder Bremen striker wrongfooted defender Bohdan Butko before blasting the ball past goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov for his second goal of the match.

Dynamo Kiev midfielder Oleh Husyev also scored twice but could not avoid Ukraine's first loss in seven matches. On Monday, coach Oleh Blokhin's team easily defeated Estonia 4-0.

Arnautovic scored in the 62nd to make it 2-1 with a low shot after picking up a blocked effort by Andreas Ivanschitz.

Zlatko Junuzovic gave Austria an early lead from a free kick in the third minute. He curled the ball over the wall of Ukraine players past keeper Oleksandr Horyainov, who was late to react. Horyainov was substituted at halftime.

Both teams created few chances in a first half that lacked fluency as passing was generally too imprecise.

Ukraine's first chance came in 22nd minute when Andriy Yarmolenko dribbled past two Austria defenders on the right wing and found the unmarked Yevhen Konoplyanka in the area, but the midfielder failed to control the ball with his left foot.

Four minutes later, Husyev's low shot from distance went just wide.

Blokhin brought veteran striker Andriy Shevchenko for the second half, which helped Ukraine improve its ball possession in attack during a more lively second half.

Shevchenko's cross found Konoplyanka, whose low show forced Austria goalkeeper Heinz Lindner into a diving save.

Two minutes later, Yarmolenko set up Husyev to score into an empty net for the equalizer.

After Arnautovic made it 2-1, Yarmolenko again found Husyev, who netted with a thundering effort from just outside the penalty area in the 65th.

Artem Milevskiy came close to giving Ukraine the lead 10 minutes later but his header was cleared from the goal line by Austria defender Markus Suttner.

In its final warmup game, Ukraine plays Turkey in Augsburg, Germany, on Tuesday. Six days, Ukraine takes on Sweden at Euro 2012 in Kiev in a group that also includes England and France.
