Indian cricketer Amit Mishra arrested for assault

NEW DELHI (AP) — Indian cricketer Amit Mishra was arrested Tuesday and charged with assaulting a woman in his hotel room last month in Bangalore.

Police officer Sandeep Patil declined to give details of the incident in the capital of southern Indian state Karnataka.

According to the Press Trust of India news agency, the woman said she had known Mishra for three years. She said she had an argument with Mishra in his hotel room on Sept. 27 and he assaulted and abused her.

Mishra has been released on bail. If convicted, he faces up to seven years in prison. Mishra was not immediately available for comment.

The 32-year-old leg-spinner has played 16 test matches and 31 one-day internationals for India. He has been selected for the first two tests against South Africa. The first test begins Nov. 5 in Mohali, northern India.
