Suspect arrested in bombing near US consulate in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi Kurdish officials say a suspect has been arrested in connection with a bombing near the U.S. consulate in the northern city of Irbil.

A statement from the Kurdish Regional Security Council on Monday says the suspect will remain in custody until an investigation is completed. It did not identify the suspect.

At least three people were killed Friday and several others wounded when a car detonated in front of a row of cafes next to the consulate. Turkey's foreign ministry said Turkish nationals were among the casualties. No U.S. consulate staff or security guards were wounded.

The Islamic State group claimed the bombing in a statement posted on Twitter. The extremists fought their way to within 30 kilometers (20 miles) of Irbil before U.S.-led airstrikes began in August.
