India 205-2 at tea, need 159 runs for win over Australia

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — India opener Murali Vijay and captain Virat Kohli combined for a 150-run partnership Saturday and looked set to save — or even help win — the first test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval.

Needing 364 runs for victory from 98 overs on the final day, India was 205-2 tea, still needing 159 runs for victory. Vijay (85) and Kohli (82) batted through the second session and added 100 runs to the India total.

The highest victorious fourth-innings test total at the Adelaide Oval was Australia's 315-6 against England in 1902.

India lost two wickets in the opening session, including opener Shikhar Dhawan, caught by wicketkeeper Brad Haddin off the bowling of Mitchell Johnson when umpire Ian Gould incorrectly ruled the ball had deflected off the batsman's glove.

The Decision Review System is not being used in the four-test series in accordance with India's policy.

Australia captain Michael Clarke left the field during the middle session with another hamstring injury, this time in his right leg.

The latest injury was another in a litany of issues with his hamstrings and back. He was passed fit to play the series opener in Adelaide after overcoming a left hamstring strain sustained in a one-day match against South Africa on Nov. 14.

He had a recurrence of his long-term back injury while batting on Tuesday's opening day which forced him to retire hurt. He had injections to soothe spasms in his back and returned to the crease the next day to complete a century.

Australia declared its second innings before the start of play Saturday at 290-5, led by David Warner's 102, giving India three sessions to achieve the run chase or play for a draw.

It was Warner's second century of the match, and the sixth century in his past 11 test innings.
