Stanford quiets Halliday and Washington State

STANFORD, California (AP) — Stanford quarterback Kevin Hogan threw for 284 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Cardinal to a 34-17 win over Washington State on Friday.

Greg Taboado grabbed his first two career TDs and fellow tight end Eric Cotton had his first scoring catch to help the No. 25-ranked Stanford rebound from a loss at Notre Dame and renew their chase for a third straight Pac-12 championship.

A week after Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday threw for a collegiate-record 734 yards, he struggled against a stingy Stanford defense that harassed him all over the backfield.

They held Halliday to 42-for-69 passing for 292 yards and two touchdowns, forced one interception and had four sacks. The Cougars have lost two in a row, and their chances of making consecutive bowl games under Mike Leach look dim.
