Defending champion England crashes out in 1970

On June 14 in World Cup history: West Germany comes from two down to beat England in Leon, Mexico, in 1970.

In the first World Cup in which substitutions were used, world champion England was eliminated at the quarterfinal stage against West Germany, the team it defeated four years earlier in the final at home at Wembley Stadium. England lost 3-2 despite being 2-0 up. Many in England attribute the defeat to coach Alf Ramsey's decision to replace England's talismanic midfielder, Bobby Charlton, after Franz Beckenbauer halved the deficit midway through the second half. An equalizer from skipper Uwe Seeler sent the game into extra time. Gerd Muller scored the winner that secured a semifinal berth against Italy.
