China's foreign minister visits new Indian leaders

NEW DELHI (AP) — China's foreign minister is visiting India's new leaders in hopes of spurring stalled trade and easing decades of tensions between the Asian nations.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in an interview published Sunday in The Hindu that "the international community, impressed by the great opportunities in India, is full of confidence in the future of the country."

Wang's visit is a sign of improving bilateral ties after decades of mutual wariness and an unresolved border dispute that triggered a brief war in 1962.

He held talks Sunday with his Indian counterpart, Sushma Swaraj, and plans to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday.

Modi is expected to court Beijing's help in reviving India's stalled economy. Bilateral trade has also stalled, falling to $65 billion last year.
