Colombian govt, rebels to receive victims' group

LA HABANA (AP) — Representatives of the Colombian government and the country's main rebel group meeting in Cuba say they'll receive a commission of victims from the conflict.

Government envoy Humberto de la Calle and representatives of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as the FARC, said Saturday they will meet with the commission during their next round of talks. A date was not set.

The announcement comes a week before the second round of presidential elections in Colombia on June 15 between incumbent President Juan Manuel Santos, who launched the peace talks, and his main challenger, Oscar Ivan Zuluaga.

The FARC is the Western Hemisphere's last remaining major leftist insurgency, having taken up arms a half century ago. It is also the hemisphere's largest active guerrilla army, with about armed 8,000 members.
