Pakistan PM to attend Indian inauguration, a first

ISLAMABAD (AP) — A spokesman for Pakistan's prime minister says he will attend the inauguration ceremony of India's Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi, a first for the nuclear-armed rivals.

Pakistan and India have fought three wars since their independence from Britain in 1947. The decision by Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif could signal an easing of tensions between the nations.

A statement Saturday from Sharif's office said the prime minister had been invited this week by New Delhi to attend the ceremony. Sharif already congratulated Modi over his victory in the election.
