Ecuador president rules out bid for another term

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — Ecuador's President Rafael Correa has told a government newspaper that he doesn't plan to seek another re-election when his term ends in 2017.

The paper El Telegrafo quotes Correa as saying it's dangerous when one person becomes indispensable.

Correa took office in 2007 and won election again in 2009 after a new constitution was adopted. He was re-elected to another four-year term in 2012.

The current constitution allows only one re-election, though last year Correa floated the idea of amending it to allow indefinite re-election. The leftist president has been pouring oil wealth into social programs and maintains high popularity ratings, although human rights groups say he's been eroding civil liberties.

The interview was published Monday and the statements were confirmed by Correa aide Andres Michelena.
